The Los Angeles Lakers opened a daunting portion of their schedule Thursday night with a 120-113 loss to the Denver Nuggets at Ball Arena, halting the Lakers’ recent run of victories.
Denver seized control immediately, scoring the first 11 points—nine from Jamal Murray—before Los Angeles found the scoreboard on a pair of Luka Doncic free throws. LeBron James followed with a driving layup, sparking a brief Lakers surge highlighted by a James alley-oop from Doncic and a three-pointer by Rui Hachimura. Tim Hardaway Jr. came off the Denver bench to drain two early triples, helping the Nuggets close the opening quarter with a 32-22 advantage.
James finished the first period with his third field goal of the night, moving past Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the most made shots in NBA history. Murray heated up again early in the second, stretching the margin to 15. Los Angeles responded with transition baskets, including consecutive layups from James and strong inside finishes by Jaxson Hayes, trimming the gap to three after back-to-back mid-range jumpers by Doncic.
Denver answered with a quick spurt to restore a double-digit cushion. During that sequence, Doncic received his 15th technical foul of the season, leaving him one away from an automatic one-game suspension. The Nuggets closed the half on a torrid stretch from beyond the arc and took a 64-54 lead to intermission.
The Lakers played the final three quarters without starting center Deandre Ayton, who exited after five first-quarter minutes with a knee injury. Forced into smaller lineups, L.A. leaned on Hayes and increased tempo. Austin Reaves scored early in the third, Hachimura knocked down another three, and Marcus Smart added one of his own as the deficit shrank to four. Doncic banked in a difficult three at the third-quarter horn, keeping the Lakers within 93-86.
Hardaway opened the fourth with five quick points, but James orchestrated a rapid 7-0 Los Angeles reply. The Lakers eventually closed to 106-105, though Smart misfired on two open jumpers in the final minutes. Nikola Jokić then delivered consecutive baskets to secure Denver’s win.
Los Angeles returns home for a back-to-back, facing the Indiana Pacers on Friday before hosting the New York Knicks on Sunday afternoon.
