Reaves Says Lakers Must Integrate Ayton on Offense After Quiet Preseason Debut

Palm Springs, Calif. — Guard Austin Reaves believes the Los Angeles Lakers have to involve newly signed center Deandre Ayton more aggressively on offense after the big man managed only two shot attempts in Friday’s preseason opener.

Ayton, who joined the Lakers this offseason, finished with one point, eight rebounds and two blocks in roughly 16–17 minutes during the 2025 preseason clash at Acrisure Arena. While his rim protection was noticeable, the 7-footer never found an offensive rhythm.

“New organization, there’s a lot he’s got to learn within our system and you can’t grade him off 16-17 minutes of basketball,” Reaves said postgame. “We, myself included, have to figure out how to help him a little bit more on the offensive end — get him the ball where he wants to have it.”

The Lakers signed Ayton to provide a dynamic scoring option in the paint, something the club lacked last season. Expectations rose further with playmakers Luka Doncic and LeBron James on the roster, yet Ayton’s first appearance highlighted his defensive focus rather than his scoring touch.

Head coach JJ Redick faces the task of keeping Ayton engaged if shot opportunities remain limited. The former No. 1 overall pick appeared content to anchor the paint, but Los Angeles will ultimately rely on two-way production from its starting center.

Ayton, whose stint with the Portland Trail Blazers ended unevenly, has emphasized a renewed commitment to defense as he acclimates to the Lakers’ system. Friday’s performance aligned with that goal, though the team hopes offensive contributions will follow as practices continue.
