Former Los Angeles Lakers forward Pau Gasol has praised the Buss family for guiding the franchise to historic heights, crediting the late Dr. Jerry Buss and current governor Jeanie Buss for creating an environment built on championship expectations.

Speaking on “The Deal with Alex Rodriguez and Jason Kelly,” Gasol said the Buss family’s passion “turned around and created an iconic franchise” after Dr. Buss purchased the team and moved it from Minneapolis to Los Angeles. Under their stewardship, the club captured 11 NBA titles.

Gasol arrived in a 2008 trade from the Memphis Grizzlies and quickly formed a formidable partnership with Kobe Bryant, winning championships in 2009 and 2010. The Spaniard said the franchise’s microscope-like scrutiny was demanding but fueled a culture of excellence. “That’s one of the biggest honors of not just my career, but my life,” he noted, referring to his jersey being retired at Crypto.com Arena.

The 18-year NBA veteran also acknowledged the organization’s next chapter after the Buss family agreed to sell the Lakers to Mark Walter at a $10 billion valuation. “Exciting to see how all that hard work and commitment has paid off,” Gasol said, adding that he will continue to support the club “in some shape or form.”

Looking ahead, Gasol expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming season, which will be led by Luka Doncic, acquired in a surprise trade last year, and LeBron James. He believes the duo can extend the Lakers’ longstanding championship tradition.

Although several years removed from his playing days, Gasol remains closely tied to the franchise, underscoring his “great respect for Dr. Buss, great respect for the family” and a commitment to cheering on the purple and gold.
