LOS ANGELES — The prospect of LeBron James wearing purple and gold beyond this season is gaining momentum, according to ESPN reporter Dave McMenamin. During the latest Hoop Collective podcast, McMenamin said the 41-year-old forward now appears more likely to return to the Los Angeles Lakers for at least one more year.

“If you’d asked me in October or December, retirement would have been the leading scenario,” McMenamin told host Brian Windhorst. “Today, with the Lakers winning 15 of their last 17 and LeBron embracing an off-ball role I’ve never seen from him, why wouldn’t he stay?”
McMenamin cited several factors working in the franchise’s favor: James’ business interests in Southern California, proximity to family, and the presence of his son Bronny on the roster. His other son, Bryce, attends school in Arizona, a short flight away. The primary drawback, McMenamin noted, could be salary. The Lakers intend to use upcoming cap space to build around Luka Doncic and add younger, two-way contributors. After expected new deals for Austin Reaves, Jaxson Hayes, Luke Kennard and potentially Rui Hachimura, limited funds may remain for James.
“If he comes back, it won’t be for a massive contract,” McMenamin said. “That would be the sacrifice. But everything else points to the Lakers, by a wide margin, as the top option.”
Role change driving success
James and agent Rich Paul have repeatedly stated that no decision will be made before the summer. Still, Los Angeles’ recent surge has altered the conversation. The Lakers finished March 15-2, their best month of the season, with James operating primarily as the third scoring option behind Doncic and Reaves.
Head coach JJ Redick praised the four-time MVP for his versatility during the 16-2 stretch that bridged late February and March. “He’s around 20 points, eight rebounds and eight assists a game, doing a little bit of everything at an elite level,” Redick said. “Every guy has contributed, and LeBron has led that.”
Official March numbers reflect the shift. In 14 appearances, James averaged 18.5 points, 6.9 rebounds and 7.0 assists while shooting 56.2 percent. The reduced usage has preserved energy for the defensive end, where his trademark chase-down blocks and transition finishes have re-emerged.
Historic milestone adds context
Earlier this week, James logged more combined regular-season and playoff victories than any player in NBA history, passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Whether that record book addition will be followed by another Lakers season remains undecided, but momentum inside the organization—and around the league—now tilts toward a return.
