Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Nate McMillan believes second-year guard Bronny James is on track to crack the club’s rotation during the upcoming 2025-26 season.

Speaking on “The Sports Shop with Reese and K-Mac,” McMillan said the 20-year-old has shown “a lot of growth from year one” after spending most of last season with the South Bay Lakers in the G League.

Improvement from Year 1 to Year 2

James, selected No. 55 overall in the 2024 NBA Draft, struggled in limited NBA minutes as a rookie but impressed during his second Summer League appearance in Las Vegas last month. McMillan pointed to increased confidence, a steadier outside shot and stronger on-ball defense as key areas of progress.

He was much more relaxed this season. His shot was never broken, but the confidence is there now. We expect him to possibly get some minutes this year,” McMillan said.

Crowded Backcourt, Long Season

The Lakers’ primary guard rotation currently features Luka Dončić, Austin Reaves, Marcus Smart and Gabe Vincent. McMillan noted that injuries and the grind of an 82-game schedule could open opportunities for James to contribute.

Strong Work Ethic Praised

Coaches and teammates have routinely cited James’ professionalism and preparation habits, traits McMillan believes have accelerated the young guard’s development.

Rookie-Season Highlight

Despite intense scrutiny as LeBron James’ son, Bronny logged a career-best outing late last season against the Milwaukee Bucks. With several starters resting, he tallied 17 points, three rebounds and five assists in nearly 30 minutes, shooting 7-for-10 from the field. James later called that performance the highlight of his rookie campaign, saying it validated his place in the league.

The Lakers open training camp this fall, when James will try to convert McMillan’s expectations into a permanent role.
