FIBA EuroBasket 2025 tipped off this week, and Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic is one of several NBA stars suiting up for their national teams. The 26-year-old is captaining Slovenia, while Nikola Jokic (Serbia), Giannis Antetokounmpo (Greece), Alperen Sengun (Turkey), Franz Wagner (Germany) and Kristaps Porzingis (Latvia) are also in action for their respective countries.
Participation in international tournaments often raises concerns among NBA clubs regarding injury risk. Doncic experienced a scare during Slovenia’s exhibition schedule when a teammate crashed into his knee, but he avoided serious damage and returned for the following game.
Speaking with Darren M. Haynes of Sports Central LA, Doncic said national-team duty is non-negotiable for him:
“I always play for my country. Playing for my country, whenever I can, is an honor for me. I try to bring medals to the country, but I’m also getting ready for the season, obviously.”
The Lakers have endorsed Doncic’s decision to play, viewing EuroBasket as useful preparation for training camp. The tournament precedes his first full NBA season in Los Angeles alongside veteran forward LeBron James.
Charles Barkley: ‘It’s Luka’s Team Now’
Hall of Famer Charles Barkley recently stated on national television that the Lakers now revolve around Doncic. Barkley argued the franchise would not have completed last season’s blockbuster trade or signed the All-NBA guard to a maximum extension unless he was expected to become the club’s primary figure.
