Los Angeles — Dallas Mavericks owner Patrick Dumont dismissed general manager Nico Harrison this week, eight months after Harrison orchestrated the February trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. The move followed weeks of home-game chants of “Fire Nico” from Mavericks fans upset by the deal.
Speaking Wednesday night after the Lakers’ loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, Doncic acknowledged the front-office change in Dallas but reiterated his commitment to Los Angeles.
“The city of Dallas, fans, players, they all have a special place in my heart,” Doncic said on Spectrum SportsNet. “I thought I was gonna stay there forever. But I didn’t. Right now, I’m focused on the Lakers, trying to move on.”
When asked whether he could imagine returning to the Mavericks in the future, the 26-year-old guard replied, “Right now I’m just focused on the Lakers. No further comments.”
Doncic spent the first six and a half seasons of his career in Dallas and never publicly requested a trade. After joining the Lakers, he signed a multi-year extension last summer that keeps him under contract in Los Angeles for at least three more seasons.
According to multiple reports, Mavericks officials had questioned Doncic’s conditioning following the trade. Despite those comments, the All-Star has avoided public criticism of his former team.
Dumont’s decision to fire Harrison came one day after the owner apologized to a young fan wearing a Doncic Lakers jersey at American Airlines Center.
