Luka Doncic Highlights Defensive Commitment in Lakers’ Early-Season Push

Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic is stressing defense as the franchise opens the 2025-26 campaign, saying improved communication and activity are driving his early success on that end of the court.

Through five games, the 26-year-old is averaging 2.0 steals and matched his career best with five steals along with two blocks in a recent win over the San Antonio Spurs. The effort marks a noticeable shift for a player long questioned for his work on defense.

Communication at the center of Doncic’s approach

Asked where his defensive focus lies, Doncic said he is prioritizing talking through coverages and directing teammates when he drops to the “low man” position. “I have to put guys in the right spots, and the activity has to stay high,” he explained after practice.

JJ Redick’s influence

Head coach JJ Redick, who has emphasized defense since training camp, has publicly praised Doncic’s buy-in. With the team’s leading scorer fully on board, Redick has indicated there is little room for others to ease up on that side of the ball.

Motivation from within

While outside criticism has trailed Doncic for years, the four-time All-Star insisted the change began with self-evaluation. “It was more about me looking at what I can do to help us win,” he said.

Early chemistry boosts Lakers

Beyond individual numbers, Doncic noted the entire roster is playing with visible enthusiasm. He credited the locker-room chemistry for the team’s energetic start as Los Angeles aims to extend its early momentum.

The Lakers resume play later this week, seeking to maintain the defensive standard set during their 4-1 opening stretch.
