LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Lakers opened training camp this week at the UCLA Health Training Center, giving newly acquired guard Luka Doncic his first opportunity to prepare for a season in purple and gold.

Following Thursday’s practice, the 26-year-old was asked to capture the experience in three words. “Fun. Excitement. Hard.” he replied, according to reporter Khobi Price of the Southern California News Group.

Doncic arrived in Los Angeles via trade last season and is expected to share leadership duties with LeBron James. Head coach JJ Redick, known for demanding practices, is overseeing the camp as the Lakers work to build chemistry before the regular-season opener later this month. The club has six preseason games to finalize rotations.

Minor injuries to James, Marcus Smart and other teammates have created additional challenges, but the roster is largely intact from last year’s postseason run, when Doncic joined mid-season and helped spark a late surge.

The Slovenian star entered camp after a productive summer with his national team at EuroBasket and a noticeable physical transformation. Redick said Doncic is “committed” to maintaining that conditioning level and has embraced the “new standard” he set for himself.
