LOS ANGELES — December 30, 2025 — Luka Doncic acknowledged that his eight turnovers were a major factor in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 128-106 defeat to the Detroit Pistons at Crypto.com Arena.
The All-NBA guard has carried a heavier playmaking load during Austin Reaves’ absence with a calf injury, but Detroit’s league-leading defense pressured him into mistakes throughout the night. Los Angeles committed 21 turnovers overall, several of them in a decisive fourth-quarter stretch that allowed the Pistons to pull away.
“Yeah, too many for me,” Doncic said postgame. “We just had a lot of turnovers. I had a lot of turnovers, and they went down in transition and scored. Gotta take care of the ball.”
Doncic still finished with 30 points and 11 assists, yet his miscues limited the Lakers’ half-court execution. With Gabe Vincent and Reaves both sidelined, head coach JJ Redick turned to rookie Nick Smith Jr. for additional ball-handling, but the lineup changes produced more errors against Detroit’s aggressive traps and passing-lane gambles.
While Los Angeles struggled to protect the ball, the defense also failed to contain dribble penetration. Detroit scored 74 points in the paint, repeatedly reaching the rim against shaky perimeter coverage. The Pistons, owners of the Eastern Conference’s best record, led comfortably for much of the second half.
Redick said the staff will search for ways to ease Doncic’s workload until Reaves returns. In the meantime, the Lakers will try to limit live-ball turnovers that fuel opponents’ transition attacks.
