With three of their top contributors sidelined, the Los Angeles Lakers leaned on LeBron James to secure a 16-point road win over the Golden State Warriors at Chase Center. James delivered 26 points, eight rebounds and 11 assists, helping the club claim its first victory since Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves went down with injuries.
Speaking to Amazon Prime’s Allie Clifton after the game, the 41-year-old forward said the team now needs him to reprise his longtime role as primary leader. “Everything,” James replied when asked what the Lakers require from him. “Nothing changes for me; it’s just back to the old ways. I’ve got to give them my leadership both on the floor and off the floor. I’ve got to lead in all facets on the court, both ends. That’s what the job requires, so I look forward to it and let’s see what we can get done.”
James had previously deferred many scoring and playmaking duties to Doncic and Reaves, instead filling gaps in rebounding, defense or scoring as needed. With Doncic, Reaves and defensive anchor Marcus Smart all injured, Los Angeles has lost much of its offensive creation and perimeter defense. Role players Luke Kennard, Jake LaRavia and rookie Bronny James have contributed in expanded roles, but the bulk of responsibility now rests on the four-time NBA champion.
In a separate roster move, the Lakers waived guard Kobe Bufkin to create an open playoff spot. The club can sign any player released before the March 1 deadline, though converting a two-way contract—such as Nick Smith Jr. or Drew Timme—remains the more likely option.
The Lakers continue their push toward the postseason with an abbreviated roster and a familiar formula: rely on LeBron James to do a little of everything.
