Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James believes Luka Doncic’s record-setting debut campaign in purple and gold stems from the guard finally feeling at home with his new organization.

In the latest episode of the “Mind the Game” podcast released this week, James told co-host Steve Nash that Doncic’s “sense of freedom” has unlocked an extraordinary run that vaulted the 27-year-old into the MVP conversation and pushed the Lakers into championship contention before a Grade 2 strain of Doncic’s left hamstring sidelined him.

“When a player feels accepted, the game opens up,” James said, explaining that Doncic needed time to adjust after spending seven seasons with his previous franchise before last summer’s blockbuster trade to Los Angeles. “Now he looks like the Luka Magic everyone knows—everything is in rhythm, and you glance at the scoreboard and it’s 40-10-8 without forcing anything.”

Doncic averaged roughly 35 points, eight rebounds and seven assists per game prior to the injury, highlighted by a 60-point performance on Mar. 19, 2026, against the Miami Heat at Kaseya Center, where James was photographed celebrating with him on the court.

The Slovenian star has spoken publicly about the shock of being traded, but teammates and staff moved quickly to help him settle in. His strongest bond has formed with backcourt partner Austin Reaves, according to team personnel.

Head coach JJ Redick said this week that Doncic remains “in good spirits” and is determined to return during the postseason, though the hamstring strain could keep him out for the remainder of the regular schedule and potentially beyond.

Until the setback, James noted, “he’s right up there with the best players I’ve ever shared the floor with.”
