During a recent episode of the “Mind the Game” podcast, Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James paused the conversation with co-host Steve Nash to celebrate former Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose.
“I hope and I hope dearly people have not forgotten about Derrick Rose,” James said. “One of the most explosive players that I’ve ever played [against] … injuries suck, they really do. He’s a legend, he’s a great, and we all love Derrick Rose.”
James, now in his 23rd NBA season, recalled multiple postseason battles with Rose during his stints in Miami and Cleveland. The four-time MVP highlighted Rose’s place in history as the youngest MVP ever, a distinction the guard earned at age 22 in 2011.
Rose led the Bulls to several playoff runs in the early 2010s before knee injuries altered his trajectory. The two veterans later became teammates briefly with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and Rose finished his career last season with the Memphis Grizzlies.
Despite the setbacks, Rose’s influence remains visible. Adou Thiero, a 2024 rookie, selected jersey No. 1 as a nod to Rose, underscoring the former Bull’s lasting imprint on the next generation.
James’ appreciation comes as he continues to chase another championship with the Lakers. Even at 39, the league’s oldest active player is still producing highlight plays, including a recent dunk over Luke Kornet against the San Antonio Spurs—an effort he later downplayed because it came in a loss.
