Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James honored the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, posting a message on Instagram as the NBA recognized the federal holiday with a full slate of games.
The Lakers were not scheduled to play on Jan. 15, but James has previously said he values competing on the holiday because it provides a platform to celebrate the civil-rights icon, who was assassinated in 1968.
Throughout his career, the four-time NBA champion has been active in social-justice initiatives, frequently lending his voice and resources to voting rights, education and other community programs. His latest tribute continues that pattern of public advocacy.
Lakers Focused on Recovery and Results
While acknowledging Dr. King’s impact, James also addressed the team’s current challenges. A series of injuries has thinned the Lakers’ rotation, but the 39-year-old insisted the group must find solutions rather than excuses.
“Because at the end of the day, no one is feeling sorry for us, nor are we looking for it,” James said. “We have what’s available and we gotta go out there and play our game, play the way we want to play offensively and defensively, and just try to right the ship until we get whole.”
Los Angeles continues its regular-season schedule later this week, aiming to climb the Western Conference standings as sidelined players work toward returning to the lineup.
