The Los Angeles Lakers’ postseason plans were jolted this week when Luka Doncic was diagnosed with a Grade 2 strain of his left hamstring and Austin Reaves learned he has a Grade 2 strain of his left oblique. The setbacks, confirmed within 48 hours of each other, leave LeBron James as the lone healthy member of the team’s star trio with the playoffs approaching.
Speaking to reporters, James described the moment he heard both pieces of news. “I took my nap after practice, and I woke up with that news,” he said of Reaves’ MRI results on Saturday. “It was like another shot to the head. It was a shot to the heart, obviously, and to the chest and to the mainframe with Luka.” Upon seeing Reaves’ update, James admitted his immediate reaction was a one-word expletive.
The four-time MVP has played alongside Reaves for five seasons and developed a strong friendship with Doncic over the past year, making the injuries personal as well as professional. While the Lakers have not ruled out either player for the playoffs, both are expected to miss the remainder of the regular season.
Head coach JJ Redick said the club’s goal is now to “extend the season” long enough for Doncic and Reaves to have a chance at returning. In the meantime, James is expected to shoulder a larger workload as Los Angeles tries to maintain its playoff position.
