LeBron James Voices Frustration With Road Games in Memphis

Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James offered unusually blunt remarks about playing in Memphis during a recent appearance on the “Bob Does Sports” podcast. The 41-year-old said he has little interest in spending time in the city when the Lakers face the Memphis Grizzlies on the road, using profanity while suggesting the franchise should relocate to Nashville.

“I’m 41 years old,” James said. “You think I want to do anything in Memphis on a random Thursday? You guys have to move the team to Nashville already.” The comments were captured on video and widely circulated on social media on April 2, 2026.

Two days later, James clarified his stance when asked by reporters, explaining that his opinion was not directed at Memphis residents. “There are two cities I don’t like playing in right now. That’s Milwaukee and Memphis,” he said, according to Law Murray of The Athletic. “I don’t like going home either, and I’m from there.”

James’ remarks echo sentiments previously expressed by several NBA players, including Kevin Durant, who have cited limited hotel options and few off-court attractions as reasons they dislike Memphis as a road destination. Despite those critiques, players routinely praise the city’s fanbase and local cuisine.

The discussion arrives as league officials continue to explore future expansion and potential franchise relocations. While no formal plans exist to move the Grizzlies, Nashville is frequently mentioned as a possible NBA market because of its larger media profile.

James is in his 23rd NBA season and has acknowledged the physical toll of preparing for games at his age, often waking up with new aches after each contest. Teammates and opponents, including Durant, have publicly speculated that the four-time MVP could still play several more seasons.

Separately, the Lakers are monitoring a new development that could shift James’ responsibilities on the court. Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Dončić was ruled out for the remainder of the regular season on April 2 with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain. Dončić had just been named Western Conference Player of the Month for March.

The Lakers may ask James to shoulder additional playmaking duties as the playoff race tightens, though the team has not announced any formal adjustments to its rotation.
