Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James will not be available when the team tips off the 2025-26 NBA season, the organization confirmed this week. The 40-year-old star is dealing with right-side sciatica, marking the first time in his career he will miss an Opening Night.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the nerve issue originated during an on-court workout in late July or early August. “It’s now two-and-a-half months and counting that he’s had to deal with it and manage it,” Charania reported, adding that James conducted limited basketball activity for more than a month leading up to the Lakers’ Sept. 29 media day at the UCLA Health Training Center.
The Lakers announced James will be re-evaluated in three to four weeks. Even if cleared, he is expected to require additional time to regain full game conditioning.
With James sidelined, Luka Doncic is slated to shoulder the primary offensive role. The early portion of the Lakers’ schedule is considered relatively light, offering the team some flexibility as it awaits James’ return.
Despite his age, James remains one of the league’s top performers. Both Doncic and guard Austin Reaves have reportedly expressed interest in continuing to play alongside the four-time MVP beyond the upcoming season.
