LeBron James needed a moment to gather himself Wednesday night after the Cleveland Cavaliers honored him with a video tribute at Rocket Arena.
The presentation aired during a first-quarter timeout of the Los Angeles Lakers’ Jan. 28 matchup in Cleveland. Cameras caught the 41-year-old forward wiping away tears on the bench as highlights from his 11 seasons with the Cavaliers—including the 2016 championship run—flashed across the scoreboard.
“I didn’t expect that,” James told Spectrum SportsNet after the game. “There’s a lot of history here. I’m just super grateful for the time I spent in this building and the memories we created.”
James added that uncertainty about whether he will play beyond his 23rd NBA season has made every stop on the road feel significant. “I’m trying to be present because this could be the last time,” he said. “I look up at that screen and it feels like yesterday. I was 22 in some of those clips.”
If James retires or chooses another destination this summer, Wednesday could stand as his final appearance in the arena where he delivered Cleveland its only major sports title in more than 50 years. Drafted first overall by the Cavaliers in 2003, the Akron native played two stints with the franchise before joining the Lakers in 2018.
The Cavaliers, according to recent reports, would welcome a reunion should James elect to test free agency for the first time since arriving in Los Angeles. The organization had previously focused on its young core but is reportedly open to a one-year swan song after consecutive early playoff exits.
The Lakers, meanwhile, turn their attention to salvaging the remainder of their road trip following a lackluster performance in Cleveland.
