Los Angeles, Feb. 7, 2026 — Lakers forward LeBron James revealed he went almost two months without alcohol or sweets last fall as part of his effort to rejoin the lineup after a preseason back issue.
Speaking on the latest episode of the “Mind the Game” podcast with Steve Nash, the 41-year-old said missing training camp and the first 14 games of the 2025-26 campaign convinced him to “sacrifice” two of his favorite indulgences: wine and chocolate-chip cookies served with ice cream.
James began the abstinence at the start of November, a span in which he was not yet cleared to play, and kept the streak going until he took his first sip and first bite on New Year’s Day. “It was good to give my body a break,” he said, noting the move helped control weight and provided a personal challenge during his recovery.
The four-time MVP, now in his 23rd NBA season, has averaged All-Star numbers since returning, keeping Los Angeles in playoff contention. He added that the temporary diet change coincided with ramp-up workouts designed to restore fitness after the back problem limited his summer training.
James has not announced whether he will play a 24th season, but team officials have signaled they would welcome his return.
