Report: Lakers Have No Plans to Trade LeBron James Before Deadline

With the NBA trade deadline approaching this week, LeBron James is expected to remain with the Los Angeles Lakers for the rest of the 2025-26 season, according to a report from ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.

League sources told the outlet that, despite conversations around the league involving several potential destinations, the Lakers have no intention of moving the veteran forward before the deadline.

Agent reinforces stance

James’ agent, Rich Paul, previously stated that his client would finish the season in purple and gold. Tuesday’s report aligns with that stance and further dampens speculation of an in-season departure.

Trade hurdles remain steep

Dealing James would require a substantial return and is complicated by Los Angeles’ desire to preserve future salary-cap flexibility. Potential suitors would also need to weigh the cost of acquiring a player who could become a short-term rental.

James, named an All-Star again this year, has carried a heavier load while guard Austin Reaves recovers from a calf injury. His workload has intensified since the two sides failed to agree on a contract extension last summer, casting uncertainty over their long-term partnership.

What’s next?

The Lakers front office continues to seek additional size, shooting and perimeter defense to bolster a roster featuring James, Reaves and Luka Doncic. While both the organization and the four-time MVP appear prepared to re-evaluate their relationship in the offseason, the immediate focus remains on pursuing a championship together.
