The Los Angeles Dodgers’ newest World Series trophy made an appearance at Crypto.com Arena on Wednesday night, Nov. 5, as the Los Angeles Lakers honored the club’s repeat championship during a break in the game against the San Antonio Spurs.
Between the first and second quarters, the Lakers played a tribute video that featured the final outs of Game 7 against the Toronto Blue Jays on Nov. 1, a game-saving double play by shortstop Mookie Betts, fan celebrations, and highlights from Monday’s championship parade. After the video, arena public address announcers introduced the Dodgers in attendance, including Betts, Alex Call, Evan Phillips, Tyler Glasnow, Blake Snell, Teoscar Hernández, and Will Smith.
Smith, the longtime Dodgers catcher, delivered the decisive home run in the 11th inning of the clincher that secured the franchise’s second straight title—the first back-to-back World Series crowns in Major League Baseball since the New York Yankees won three straight from 1998 to 2000. The Dodgers, owned by new Lakers majority owner Mark Walter, have reached the postseason in every year but one since 2013 and now stand as baseball’s newest dynasty.
The Lakers completed the celebratory night with a 118-116 victory over Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs, their fifth consecutive win, improving to 7-2. Los Angeles is off to the strong start despite LeBron James missing all nine games and Luka Doncic sitting out four; in five appearances, Doncic is averaging 40.0 points, 11.8 rebounds, 9.2 assists, and 2.0 steals.
