ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith said he is “good” if he never speaks to LeBron James again, underscoring an ongoing rift that began with a courtside confrontation last season.
During an appearance on “Gil’s Arena Show” released on Aug. 15, 2025, Smith stated, “If I never ever speak to him again in life, I’m good with it.” The remark comes months after the analyst and the Los Angeles Lakers star exchanged words at Crypto.com Arena.
The dispute originated on Dec. 18, 2024, when Smith criticized James’ son, Bronny, and questioned LeBron’s parenting on ESPN’s “First Take” following the Lakers’ loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. Bronny’s difficult outing—his first in the rotation—prompted the segment. Days later, James confronted Smith during a home game, sparking widespread attention.
In the aftermath, Smith acknowledged the two “don’t like each other,” and said any chance at reconciliation had passed. For his part, James addressed the tension once on “The Pat McAfee Show,” expressing similar sentiments toward the broadcaster.
The feud grew large enough that NBA Commissioner Adam Silver was asked about it during media availability. Silver said he preferred conversation remain centered on basketball rather than personal disputes between “two powerful people.”
The latest exchange appears to close the chapter, with both sides reaffirming their positions: Smith maintains respect for James’ on-court accomplishments, and James has made clear he has little interest in further dialogue with the ESPN personality.
