Lakers Teammates Applaud Luka Doncic’s Sharpened Defense in Win Over Spurs

Luka Doncic’s offensive fireworks have been routine this season, but his defense drew the loudest praise after the Los Angeles Lakers’ 123-118 comeback victory against the San Antonio Spurs on Nov. 6. The 26-year-old guard finished with 35 points, narrowly missed a triple-double, and matched his career high with five steals while adding two blocks, helping Los Angeles improve to 7-2.

Rui Hachimura, who spent much of the night guarding rookie center Victor Wembanyama, said Doncic’s commitment on the other end of the floor has been noticeably stronger than a year ago.

Hachimura on Doncic’s new approach

“He’s trying to be more vocal on defense,” Hachimura told reporters after the game. “He’s being more physical, more aggressive. That’s what we need from him.” The forward joked that Doncic’s intensity nearly put him in foul trouble but added that the increased edge is benefitting the entire roster.

Smart caught off guard by stat line

Veteran guard Marcus Smart learned of Doncic’s five steals and two blocks during his post-game media session and reacted with disbelief. ESPN’s Dave McMenamin captured the moment in a video posted to X (formerly Twitter), showing Smart exclaiming, “Luka had what?”

Doncic’s offensive production — he is averaging well over 30 points through nine games — was expected. The defensive surge, however, has helped Los Angeles stay in the upper tier of the Western Conference standings while LeBron James remains sidelined.

Head coach Darvin Ham has leaned on new acquisitions Deandre Ayton, Smart and Jake LaRavia to solidify the rotation around Doncic, and the early results have been positive. “I’m really enjoying playing with this group,” Doncic said earlier this week, noting the roster’s depth and versatility.

The Lakers return to Crypto.com Arena on Nov. 8 to face the Portland Trail Blazers as they look to extend their fast start and maintain momentum on both sides of the ball.
