The National Basketball Association is expected to approve the sale of the Los Angeles Lakers to Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter within the next few months, according to multiple league sources.

In June, the Buss family reached an agreement to transfer its controlling stake in the franchise to Walter at a valuation of $10 billion. Walter, who is also CEO and chairman of TWG Global, will become the Lakers’ new governor once three-quarters of the NBA Board of Governors vote in favor of the transaction.

Jeanie Buss, the team’s current governor, is slated to oversee daily operations for the foreseeable future, a move designed to maintain stability for players and staff as preparations continue for the 2025-26 season.

While the NBA’s salary-cap system limits direct spending on player payroll, league insiders believe Walter’s resources could bolster areas such as facilities, research and support staff, mirroring the investment strategy he employed with the Dodgers.
