Los Angeles Lakers forward Rui Hachimura is not likely to sign a new deal before training camp, according to reporting from Jovan Buha of “Buha’s Block.”

The 27-year-old forward has been eligible for an extension since July 6 but is now poised to begin the 2025-26 season on the final year of his contract. Buha said the front office intends to “keep the books clean” while it evaluates whether Hachimura will start or come off the bench.

The Lakers have shifted strategy under new ownership and around newly acquired star Luka Doncic, preferring short-term flexibility over long-term commitments. That approach leaves Hachimura, a key role player since arriving from the Washington Wizards in a 2023 trade, playing for his next contract.

Hachimura averaged improved three-point shooting after moving to Los Angeles but still faces questions about rebounding and individual defense—areas the coaching staff hopes will progress this season. A strong year could position him for a larger role or a new deal next summer, when the Lakers could create maximum cap space but risk losing several free agents, including Hachimura.

In preparation for camp, the Japanese native spent part of the offseason training with sumo wrestlers in Japan, a routine he has credited with building strength and balance.
