The Los Angeles Lakers remain focused on fortifying their perimeter defense and continue to view New Orleans Pelicans forward Herb Jones as a prime trade target, according to league sources cited by HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto.

Jones, a 2024 NBA All-Defensive First Team selection, has earned a reputation as one of the league’s premier 3-and-D specialists. The 26-year-old owns a career three-point mark above 36 percent and is regarded as an athletic, multi-positional defender—traits the Lakers believe would fit seamlessly alongside Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves and LeBron James.

Los Angeles already employs noted stoppers Marcus Smart and Jarred Vanderbilt, yet the club has struggled for several seasons to contain quick, explosive guards. Team executives have publicly acknowledged the need for additional perimeter resistance and are actively scanning the market for upgrades.

Multiple reports indicate, however, that New Orleans is not entertaining offers for Jones despite owning one of the NBA’s worst records. Even if the Pelicans reconsider, the Lakers’ available assets are not believed to meet the Pelicans’ valuation. New Orleans has already dealt its 2026 first-round pick, removing any incentive to tank for draft position.

Head coach JJ Redick recently outlined the importance of acquiring versatile role players to complement the Lakers’ star trio, and Jones fits that description. For now, though, landing the defensive wing remains an aspiration rather than an imminent move.
