The NBA is evaluating Hall of Famer Pau Gasol for a leading role in its forthcoming European league, multiple sources told The Athletic.

Commissioner Adam Silver convened roughly 250 guests at a London hotel near the Thames River earlier this week to discuss the project’s framework. Gasol, invited as both a speaker and participant, addressed the group about the importance of developing basketball’s infrastructure on the continent.

“It’s all about learning from each other. It’s about the ecosystem, the grassroots, the domestic leagues and the impact on the children,” the six-time NBA All-Star said during the session. “There’s so much at stake, and that’s why I think this is so important and so impactful.”

International sources cited by The Athletic said Gasol is under serious consideration for a prominent executive post. The league’s leadership model—whether a single commissioner or a team of executives—has not yet been finalized, and Gasol declined further comment when contacted.

Gasol, 44, played professionally in Spain before joining the NBA in 2001 and later won two championships with the Los Angeles Lakers. He has remained active as a global ambassador for the sport since retiring in 2021.
