New Los Angeles Lakers owner Mark Walter has already expressed strong support for the franchise’s new cornerstone, Luka Doncic, following their first in-person meeting last week, according to NBA reporter Marc Stein.
Stein’s report states that Walter, who recently completed his purchase of the team, is a “huge” fan of the 24-year-old guard. The introduction came shortly after Doncic finalized a three-year, $165 million contract extension that secures his place with the Lakers through the 2026-27 season.
Doncic, acquired from the Dallas Mavericks earlier this year, said he did not need much time to decide on a long-term future in Los Angeles. “I was kind of thinking, obviously not in the moment when I got traded. But later on, when I started playing, I wanted to be here,” he told reporters. “This is an amazing organization, we have trust in each other. So, I honestly decided pretty quick.”
The Slovenian star led Dallas to the 2024 NBA Finals before the trade that brought him to the Lakers. With Walter now in charge and Doncic locked in, the organization’s focus shifts to building a roster capable of adding to Los Angeles’ championship tally.
