Los Angeles, CA — The Los Angeles Lakers expect guard Luka Doncic to be sidelined for roughly one week after injuring a finger and knee during the team’s Oct. 14 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.
The All-Star, who scored 49 points with 11 rebounds and eight assists in that game, will miss tonight’s matchup with the Sacramento Kings and will be re-evaluated in approximately seven days. Team medical staff members are reportedly confident the 26-year-old will not require additional recovery time beyond the initial estimate.
Doncic opened the 2025-26 season by topping 40 points in each of the first two contests, helping Los Angeles secure its first win of the year. Coaches have credited an offseason strength and conditioning program for his quicker, more explosive play.
His absence comes while LeBron James is already out, leaving Austin Reaves to orchestrate the offense. Forward Rui Hachimura and newcomers Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart are expected to shoulder larger scoring roles until Doncic returns.
Despite the short-term setback, the Lakers’ upcoming schedule is viewed internally as manageable. Former franchise star Dirk Nowitzki recently predicted Doncic would lead the league in scoring this season.
