El Segundo, Calif. — Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James completed his first five-on-five workout of the season on Tuesday with the club’s G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers, and came away pain-free, league sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The 40-year-old has been sidelined since training camp with sciatica in his right side. To regain game speed while the NBA squad is on a five-game road trip, the Lakers assigned James to South Bay for live action. According to Charania, observers said the four-time MVP “looked great” and “felt great,” showing no visible discomfort during the session.
The practice marked James’s first competitive five-on-five action of what will be his unprecedented 23rd NBA season. Team officials will monitor how he responds overnight and in subsequent workouts before clearing him for a return. Los Angeles is evaluating him on a day-to-day basis, with a potential mid-to-late-month debut targeted. One tentative date under consideration is Nov. 18, when the Lakers host the Utah Jazz, aligning with the original recovery timeline.
Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic said players around the league are eager to see James back on the court. “We can’t wait. All of us can’t wait,” Doncic told reporters. “It’s Bron, so it’s always good to have him back. Hopefully soon.”
James is expected to rejoin the parent club for practice once the Lakers return from the road trip, gaining additional reps before making his regular-season debut.
