The Los Angeles Lakers have been monitoring Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga since last summer and remain interested in a possible trade ahead of the Feb. 5 deadline, league insider Jake Fischer reported.
Fischer said the Lakers contacted Golden State during Kuminga’s offseason contract standoff and have continued to track the 23-year-old’s situation while searching the league’s limited supply of wing players. Los Angeles, currently 23-13, is seeking a sizable “3-and-D” option who can defend on the perimeter and stretch the floor but is only willing to compromise future cap flexibility for what the front office considers a true difference-maker.
Kuminga’s production dip
Through 18 games this season, Kuminga is averaging 11.8 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 24 minutes, his lowest marks in three NBA campaigns. He is shooting 43.1 percent from the field and 32 percent from beyond the arc. The former lottery pick has struggled to mesh with the Warriors’ veteran core and has had reported disagreements with head coach Steve Kerr.
Contract fits Lakers’ timeline
Kuminga re-signed with Golden State in the summer on a two-year, $48 million contract that includes a team option for 2026-27. For Los Angeles, that structure would allow the remainder of this season to serve as a trial period. If the fit proves successful, the Lakers could exercise the option or negotiate a new agreement; if not, they could decline the option and preserve maximum cap space next offseason.
With fewer than six weeks until the trade deadline, Los Angeles continues to survey the market for wing help. Whether the franchise rekindles talks with Golden State will depend on price and the organization’s assessment of Kuminga’s ability to elevate a roster aiming for another championship run.
