Executives and scouts around the NBA increasingly believe the 2025-26 campaign will mark the end of LeBron James’ tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers, according to Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report.

James, who turns 41 during the season, is in the last year of his contract and has no player or team option for 2026-27. It is the first time in his 23-year career he has entered a season without an extra year of security.

Agent Rich Paul said before opening night that he and James would evaluate the superstar’s future once the season ends. That remark, along with reports that James has concerns about the roster, fueled speculation he could be traded or leave as a free agent next summer.

Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka publicly stated he wants the four-time champion to finish his career in purple and gold. Despite that stance, league sources told Pincus that most front-office personnel expect James to move on—either by joining another team or retiring—when this season concludes.

Los Angeles is also eyeing maximum salary-cap flexibility for the 2027 offseason and is reluctant to carry guaranteed money beyond next year. That financial strategy could complicate any effort to keep James if he chooses to play past 2025-26.
