Lakers Rule Out Jaxson Hayes and Maxi Kleber Moments Before Tip-Off Against Timberwolves

The Los Angeles Lakers scratched Jaxson Hayes and Maxi Kleber shortly before Tuesday night’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, citing back issues for both frontcourt players.

Hayes was listed with back soreness, while Kleber was removed because of a lumbar strain. Neither player had appeared on the official injury report earlier in the day, but both were held out after pre-game warmups.

The late decisions left Los Angeles thin up front. With LeBron James missing a third straight contest due to hip and foot problems, head coach Darvin Ham had only starting center Deandre Ayton available from his regular big-man rotation. Two-way center Drew Timme and small-ball lineups were the remaining options against a Timberwolves squad that leans heavily on size.

Tuesday’s matchup carried added weight in the Western Conference race. The Lakers entered the night one game behind Minnesota for the No. 3 seed and already own the season tiebreaker after winning the first two meetings.

The team has not indicated how long Hayes or Kleber might be sidelined. Their status, along with that of James, will be monitored ahead of Thursday’s home game versus the Chicago Bulls.

Hayes, enjoying a strong season, recently drew praise from guard Austin Reaves for increased maturity and preparation. “You can tell he is growing in those aspects and that’s just made him a better player,” Reaves said.
