Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic said he intends to pick up defensive techniques from newcomer Marcus Smart after actively recruiting the veteran guard to join him in Southern California.
Speaking at a press conference to announce his contract extension, Doncic joked that Smart—acquired after a buyout with the Washington Wizards—will be his personal tutor on that end of the floor. “We added Marcus, so he’s going to teach me some things,” Doncic said.
Smart, the 2021-22 NBA Defensive Player of the Year, is expected to play a significant role under head coach JJ Redick, either as a starter or as a key reserve. The 30-year-old guard is known for guarding multiple positions and disrupting bigger opponents by forcing them away from the paint.
Doncic, 26, arrived at training camp in what he called the best shape of his career. The four-time All-NBA selection said improved conditioning should help him contribute more consistently on defense while still carrying a heavy offensive workload. “I’m a little bit faster and in better condition,” he noted. “Playing a lot of minutes and a lot of games—that’s going to be best for me.”
Criticism of Doncic’s fitness trailed him when he was traded from the Dallas Mavericks last summer. In response, he overhauled his diet and training program during the offseason and then helped the Lakers land key free agents, including Smart.
Smart confirmed that Doncic’s personal outreach influenced his decision to sign with Los Angeles. “It meant a lot that Luka called,” Smart said shortly after finalizing his deal.
Doncic also thanked the Lakers for embracing him after the trade. “I was heartbroken leaving Dallas, but this organization welcomed me with open arms,” he said.
Los Angeles opens the 2025-26 season next month, when Doncic and Smart are expected to make their regular-season debut as teammates.
