Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic said he expects “every” Luke Kennard three-pointer to drop after watching the newly acquired sharpshooter in practice this week.
The Lakers obtained Kennard from the Atlanta Hawks at the Feb. 6 trade deadline, sending Gabe Vincent the other way. Although the veteran wing has appeared in only four games for Los Angeles, head coach JJ Redick has already made him a regular part of the rotation to bolster the team’s perimeter shooting.
Doncic, who missed the final game before the All-Star break with a hamstring strain, returned to action during Sunday’s NBA All-Star Game and reported no lingering discomfort. With the injury behind him, the four-time All-NBA selection is expected to play Friday against the L.A. Clippers—his first opportunity to share the court with Kennard.
Doncic Impressed After First Practice Together
“I think he’s been great,” Doncic said Wednesday. “In practice today he was great just finding himself. He’s only played, what, four games with us? So obviously he’s not going to fit in right away; he needs some time. But once he shoots a three, I always think it goes in, so it’s great to see that.”
Los Angeles ranks near the middle of the league in three-point percentage, and opposing defenses have routinely collapsed on Doncic, daring other Lakers to shoot. Kennard, a career 43 percent shooter from deep, is expected to stretch defenses and open passing lanes for the team’s primary playmaker.
Front Office Confident in Doncic-Led Core
Governor Jeanie Buss reiterated the organization’s commitment to building around Doncic, calling the 27-year-old guard “the perfect superstar” for the franchise’s next era. Buss added that the club is “proud” to have him in purple and gold and believes fans will continue to flock to Crypto.com Arena to watch him.
While Kennard’s arrival addresses a clear offensive need, the Lakers remain focused on tightening their defense as they begin the season’s second half. Los Angeles enters Friday’s matchup against the Clippers looking to gain ground in the Western Conference standings.
