Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James said he will not compete in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, while Stephen Curry called a return to Team USA “highly unlikely.” The two discussed their plans on the Nov. 18, 2025 episode of the “Mind the Game” podcast.

James, 40, told co-host JJ Redick that suiting up at age 44 is off the table. Curry, who would be 40 when the 2028 tournament tips off, stopped short of a definitive no but said he does not expect to play.

First—and likely last—Olympic partnership in 2024

James and Curry shared a national-team court for the first time at the Paris 2024 Olympics, joining Kevin Durant on what was widely considered one of the deepest U.S. rosters ever assembled. Team USA defeated France for the gold medal, with James earning tournament MVP honors and Curry taking over in the semifinal and final rounds.

Age the primary factor

Although James has continued to reset expectations for longevity, the four-time NBA champion acknowledged that a five-week Olympic run at 44 is unrealistic. Curry echoed that sentiment, noting the physical demands of another full summer of international play.

James focused on Lakers return

For now, James is working his way back from sciatica that sidelined him on opening night for the first time in his NBA career. “It sucks,” he said on the podcast, adding that he is undergoing daily treatment to rejoin the Lakers’ lineup.

The 2028 Games will mark the first Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles since 1984. If James and Curry stick to their current stance, their gold-medal performance in Paris will stand as their lone appearance together on basketball’s biggest international stage.
