Lakers Star LeBron James Details Pregame Superstitions

Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James says his game-day success starts long before the opening tip, hinging on a set of superstitions he refuses to break. Speaking on Complex’s “360 With Speedy,” the 40-year-old explained that his uniform and footwear choices follow a strict routine as he prepares for his 23rd NBA season.

“I lay my uniform out the same way before every game,” James said. “I’ll pick a shoe based on the opponent or a specific player. If I go out in warmups and the shoes don’t feel right, I’ll run back and change them before the game starts. If I’m terrible in the first quarter, they’re getting swapped out.”

James added that he rarely needs a mid-game switch because “there aren’t many bad quarters” for him. Still, he credits the willingness to change shoes—and everything else in his routine—for keeping him sharp after 22 seasons of All-NBA play.

Los Angeles hopes the offseason acquisition of Luka Dončić will ease the four-time champion’s workload. Even with another superstar on the roster, James said he plans to keep doing “whatever is needed” to win, leaning on the rituals that have defined his career.

Although James offered no timeline for retirement, he recently outlined personal goals for life after basketball, underscoring that every season could be his last. For now, the superstitions hold: uniform laid out, shoes carefully chosen—then swapped if necessary.
