PHILADELPHIA — Speaking on his 41st birthday, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James described the guidance he wishes he could have offered himself when he entered the NBA at age 18.
“Keep the main thing the main thing,” James said, emphasizing hard work, dedication and focus. “There’s no substitute for hard work. Hard work and dedication, if you want to be great, is going to pay off. Keep the blinders on. As much as they praise you, it’s even triple, quadruple of people trying to bring you down and want to tear you down every single day.”
James, photographed on Dec. 7, 2025, at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia before a game against the 76ers, also underscored the importance of protecting family and mental health. “Protect your family. Protect your mental space,” he said. “Just go out and have fun. Enjoy the ride because you never know when it comes to an end. It goes fast.”
The four-time NBA champion entered the league in 2003 as one of the most celebrated prospects in American sports history and is now in his 23rd season. Despite the unprecedented spotlight he has faced since high school, James remains a key contributor for Los Angeles.
He added that he refuses to use the team’s recent injury issues as an excuse for the Lakers’ struggles, reiterating his commitment to helping the club contend.
