Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James marked what might have been his last game in Cleveland by presenting his game jersey to his mother, Gloria James, moments after Wednesday night’s 128-121 defeat to the Cleveland Cavaliers at Rocket Arena on Jan. 28, 2026.
James, a native of nearby Akron who spent 11 seasons with the Cavaliers and delivered the franchise’s only NBA championship in 2016, inscribed a personal message on the No. 23 uniform: “To Mama James, Love you with all my heart & more. Thank you for everything and beyond. YOU’RE INCREDIBLE #TheRealMVP.” Local television reporter Mason Horodyski shared an image of the jersey on social media shortly after the final buzzer.
The 39-year-old superstar grew emotional during a video tribute aired by the Cavs and later reflected on the significance of the evening. “My mom gets to watch her son and her grandson play in the NBA at the same time,” James told reporters, referencing his rookie teammate and first-round pick Bronny James. “I actually just started to think about how insane that is. Yeah, that’s awesome.”
While speculation continues that James could retire after completing his 23rd NBA season, the four-time MVP said he has not made any decisions about a farewell tour. He reiterated that any discussion about the future will begin with his family.
