Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James says first-time NBA coach JJ Redick reminds him of Hall of Famer Mike Krzyzewski, crediting the former shooting guard’s direct, no-nonsense style for the team’s early success.

Speaking on the podcast “Mind The Game” with Steve Nash, James noted that Redick’s approach in his second season on the Lakers’ bench mirrors the methods Krzyzewski used at Duke and with USA Basketball. “With Coach K there’s no sugarcoating,” James said. “JJ is kind of the same way—right to the point, no sugarcoating—this is how we want to play.”

Redick, 41, entered coaching with the Lakers in 2024 after leaving ESPN and is guiding a roster featuring Luka Doncic, emerging standout Austin Reaves and a 40-year-old James. The Lakers are in playoff position for a second consecutive year under Redick, who spent four seasons under Krzyzewski at Duke before a 15-year NBA playing career.

James, now in his 23rd NBA campaign, praised Redick’s willingness to hold players accountable while maintaining a supportive tone. “It’s not to down you,” he said of Redick’s feedback. “It’s about helping you understand what we’re trying to build long term.”

Since returning from a 14-game absence caused by sciatica, James has shifted his role, deferring to Doncic and Reaves. Over three games he is averaging 17.7 points on 13.3 shots—both career lows—along with 5.0 rebounds and 8.7 assists. James said his only priority is winning, even requesting that Doncic be introduced last during starting-lineup announcements.
