Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick provided a detailed explanation of how newly signed center Deandre Ayton will be used this season, saying the team plans to keep the 27-year-old involved offensively while counting on him to anchor the defense.
Speaking on SiriusXM NBA Radio after the club’s first two preseason contests, Redick noted that Ayton “has to touch the basketball” because he will be asked to screen, run the floor and protect the rim. The coach added that Los Angeles has held just four practices and still has “about 15 days” before opening night to finalize shot distribution and responsibilities.
Pressure on the Rim a Priority
Redick emphasized that all of the Lakers’ big men must put pressure on the basket both as lob targets and as runners. He highlighted Ayton’s ability to exploit smaller defenders on switches, something the roster lacked after last season’s trade deadline.
Slow Offensive Start, Strong Defensive Showing
Ayton, bought out by the Portland Trail Blazers and considered the highest-upside center available in free agency, has yet to find an offensive rhythm in the preseason. Guard Austin Reaves acknowledged the need to get the ball to the 6-foot-11 center more often, a process expected to improve with additional practice time.
Defensively, Ayton has impressed early despite a league-wide perception that defense is not his strength. Redick made clear the Lakers will rely on him heavily at that end of the floor.
Ayton Sees Benefit in Elite Playmaking
Earlier in the offseason, Ayton said that sharing the court with Luka Doncic would simplify the game for him because of the Dallas guard’s elite passing, underscoring Ayton’s belief that playing alongside top playmakers maximizes his skill set.
The Lakers open the 2025-26 regular season in just over two weeks, giving Redick and Ayton limited but crucial time to solidify the center’s two-way role.
