Boston Celtics guard Jaylen Brown used NBA All-Star Weekend to publicly endorse a league-wide, one-on-one tournament and personally challenge several high-profile opponents, including Luka Doncic of the Los Angeles Lakers.
Speaking with Off The Dribble Sports during festivities surrounding the 2025 All-Star event, Brown said the head-to-head format would highlight “the purity of the game” and suggested a boxing-style approach where players “call a guy out.” He listed Doncic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Brunson and Donovan Mitchell among the players he would face. “We could donate to whatever charity,” Brown added. “Let’s set it up.”
The concept of a one-on-one competition has circulated for several seasons as the league searches for new attractions. Commissioner Adam Silver has already introduced recent innovations such as the NBA Cup and the Play-In Tournament. A major hurdle remains finding an incentive strong enough to draw top-tier stars, whether financial or pride-based.
Luka Doncic Focused on Title Run
While Brown campaigns for a new contest, Doncic continues to lead the league in scoring during his first full season with the Lakers. The MVP candidate acknowledged the team’s uneven first half—marked by injuries and inconsistent play—but said he believes Los Angeles has “a team that can win an NBA championship” as it enters the stretch run.
The exchange between Brown and Doncic took place on the same weekend the NBA debuted a revised All-Star format featuring Team USA vs. Team World in a three-team tournament, with Doncic finishing as the leading vote-getter.
