Giannis Antetokounmpo Lists Lakers’ Luka Doncic Among NBA’s Top Five Active Players

Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo says Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic belongs on the shortlist of the NBA’s best current players.
Speaking with SPORT24’s Harris Stavrou on Sept. 23, 2025, the two-time MVP identified his top five active players as himself, Doncic, Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic, Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum.
“I believe me, Luka, Jokic, SGA and Tatum are the top five right now,” Antetokounmpo told Stavrou, noting that he favors “two-way players” and also appreciates the games of Anthony Edwards, Anthony Davis and Kawhi Leonard.
Doncic Remains in Elite Company Despite Difficult Season
Doncic arrived in Los Angeles via a mid-season trade last year and battled injuries, yet still averaged 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 7.7 assists. Oddsmakers list Doncic, Antetokounmpo, Jokic and Gilgeous-Alexander among the early favorites for the 2025-26 MVP award.
Tatum, also included in Antetokounmpo’s top five, is expected to miss the entire season after tearing his Achilles tendon during last spring’s playoffs.
Trade Underscored League-Wide Uncertainty
Antetokounmpo added that Doncic’s blockbuster move to the Lakers underscored how any player can be traded, regardless of stature. The deal remains one of the most surprising transactions in recent sports history.
Antetokounmpo’s list leaves out several high-profile stars, including LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, Donovan Mitchell, Jalen Brunson and reigning Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama, highlighting the league’s depth of talent.
