Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell acknowledged that the chance to play alongside LeBron James would be “special” if the four-time MVP chooses to return to his hometown franchise in free agency this summer.
James, whose contract with the Los Angeles Lakers expires at the end of the current season, is set to become an unrestricted free agent. Speculation around the league has centered on a possible reunion with the Cavaliers, where he spent 11 seasons and delivered the organization’s only NBA championship in 2016.
During an appearance on SiriusXM NBA Radio, Mitchell was asked about the prospect of sharing the court with the 39-year-old forward. While stressing that his focus remains on the Cavaliers’ current campaign, he did not hide his enthusiasm:
“As a Bron fan, to be able to be a teammate, that would obviously be special, but that’s not something in my control. I control what we got here. There’s always going to be reports—that’s natural. At the end of the day, my main focus right now is trying to get this championship. Whatever happens, it happens.”
A return by James would place him alongside a Cleveland core featuring All-Star Mitchell, veteran point guard James Harden and emerging big man Evan Mobley, a trio viewed as close to title contention. If he suits up next season, it would mark the 24th year of his NBA career.
The Lakers, meanwhile, are reportedly open to bringing James back should he decide against retirement and choose to remain in Los Angeles.
