Miami Heat center Bam Adebayo entered the record books on Tuesday night, scoring 83 points in a 128-119 victory over the Washington Wizards at Kaseya Center in Miami.

The outburst establishes the 28-year-old as the owner of the second-highest single-game total in NBA history, edging past Kobe Bryant’s famed 81-point performance from 2006 and trailing only Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game in 1962.

‘Wondering What He’d Say’

Moments after the final horn, Adebayo reflected on surpassing a childhood idol.

“To me it’s wondering what he’d say,” Adebayo said of Bryant. “You’ve seen 60, 70, but 83 and you pass him—my mind is like, ‘What would he say to me?’ I’ve always wanted to have a conversation with him. He’d probably say, ‘Do it again.’ It’s a surreal moment being in the company of somebody you idolized growing up.”

Game Snapshot

The Wizards led 62-59 at halftime before Adebayo exploded for 48 points in the second half, finishing 30-for-42 from the field and 19-for-22 at the free-throw line. Washington, sitting near the bottom of the Eastern Conference, offered little resistance as Miami pulled away late.

Adebayo’s previous career high was 41 points, set in 2023. He entered the game averaging 23.4 points this season.

Bryant’s Benchmark Falls

Bryant’s 81 points against the Toronto Raptors on Jan. 22, 2006 had stood as the league’s highest total in the modern era for two decades. The Lakers star scored 55 after intermission that night, erasing an 18-point deficit and cementing a legacy that inspired Adebayo and numerous current players.

With offenses continuing to accelerate league-wide, Adebayo acknowledged the possibility that his own mark may not last long. For now, the Heat center joins Chamberlain and Bryant as the only players to exceed 80 points in an NBA game.
