LOS ANGELES — Speaking at Lakers Media Day on Sept. 29, 2025, LeBron James said he intends to concentrate on the upcoming schedule rather than speculate about how much longer he will play.

“I’m just trying to go out there and be the best player I can be every night,” James told reporters. “Knowing that the end is soon, I don’t want to take it for granted. Let’s lock in and enjoy the moment and enjoy the rest of the ride.”

The 40-year-old forward will become the first player in NBA history to appear in a 23rd season when the Lakers open 2025-26. He is set to enter unrestricted free agency next summer, leaving both his long-term plans and his potential destination unresolved.

Asked directly whether this could be his final year, James replied that he is “excited for the journey” but remains uncertain about retirement.

Coach Redick encouraged by offseason conversations

First-year head coach JJ Redick said he spoke regularly with James over the summer and believes the four-time MVP is in a “great spot mentally.” According to Redick, the two met for dinner in Sag Harbor during free agency and later reconvened in Los Angeles.

“I came away from that thinking he’s going to give us his absolute best,” Redick said at his introductory press conference.

James enters the season with career totals of 40,474 points, 11,150 rebounds and 10,769 assists. The Lakers open training camp this week before beginning preseason play on Oct. 8.
