Lakers keep door open for wing upgrade, still monitoring Andrew Wiggins

Training camp is less than a month away, and the Los Angeles Lakers are still weighing options to bolster their perimeter depth before the 2025-26 NBA season begins.

League insider Marc Stein reported that the front office remains interested in acquiring a two-way wing, with Miami Heat forward Andrew Wiggins viewed as a potential target should he become available.

Win-now approach shapes roster decisions

Los Angeles is coming off a 50-win campaign and has already added center Deandre Ayton, guard Marcus Smart and forward Jake LaRavia this offseason. The team also secured Luka Dončić to a three-year, $165 million extension on Aug. 2 and has LeBron James under contract for one more year, underscoring an aggressive push to contend immediately.

According to Stein, the Lakers’ earlier hesitation to take on contracts extending beyond the 2025-26 season has “thawed,” opening the possibility of a deal if the right player emerges.

Why Wiggins fits the profile

Wiggins, 30, is slated to earn $28.2 million in 2025-26 and holds a $30.2 million player option for 2026-27. His two-way skill set lines up with the Lakers’ desire for a defensive-minded wing who can also contribute offensively alongside Dončić, James and Austin Reaves.

For now, Miami has indicated no interest in moving the veteran forward, and other reports suggest the Lakers are not actively pursuing him. However, Stein noted that circumstances could change if the Heat decide to reduce payroll later in the season.

Looking ahead

The Lakers have until the Feb. 5 trade deadline to finalize any roster tweaks. While opening night appears set, the organization is expected to monitor the market for opportunities that could elevate its championship outlook.

Franchise legend Pau Gasol recently voiced enthusiasm about the upcoming campaign, particularly with Dončić now in purple and gold.
