The Los Angeles Lakers confirmed Thursday that LeBron James will be available to face the Chicago Bulls after missing three games with a right hip contusion and left foot arthritis. Marcus Smart (right hip contusion), Jaxson Hayes (back soreness) and Maxi Kleber (lumbar strain) have been ruled out.
Los Angeles went 3-0 during James’ latest absence, recording victories over the New York Knicks and Minnesota Timberwolves. The team is 14-7 this season when the forward sits, a mark that improves when Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves are both in uniform.
Smart’s injury removes a key defensive leader and secondary ball-handler. Head coach JJ Redick is expected to insert Jake LaRavia into the starting lineup to take on primary defensive duties, while Luke Kennard should receive additional minutes. Redick could also turn to Adou Thiero or Dalton Knecht for depth on the perimeter.
With Hayes and Kleber sidelined for a second straight game, the Lakers remain thin behind starting center Deandre Ayton. Redick may deploy smaller lineups or call on rookie Drew Timme to cover frontcourt minutes.
Los Angeles is aiming for its fourth consecutive win and seventh in eight games. Chicago has taken three of its last five after a winless February and features threats in Josh Giddey and rookie Matas Buzelis, who scored 41 points in his previous outing.
