LeBron James is slated to work out with the South Bay Lakers later this week as part of his recovery from a sciatic nerve issue, according to the Southern California News Group.

The 40-year-old forward has not played this season after experiencing sciatica during an offseason workout. Initial medical projections called for a four-to-six-week absence, pointing to a possible mid-November return. James’ rehabilitation has remained on schedule, team officials said.

Head coach JJ Redick told reporters before Monday’s game in Charlotte that James would practice with the G League affiliate that day, but a team source later clarified the session would take place “sometime this week” while the Lakers continue a five-game road trip.

The organization requires James to complete live five-on-five action before being cleared for NBA competition. Logging a full practice with South Bay would satisfy that benchmark.

If all goes well, the four-time MVP could rejoin the Lakers’ lineup on Nov. 18, when Los Angeles hosts the Utah Jazz. Should additional conditioning be necessary, the next realistic target is Nov. 23, also at home against Utah.

James did not accompany the Lakers on their current trip, which began Saturday in Atlanta. The club has held a winning record without him, lessening any urgency to accelerate his timetable.
