Lakers Eye Low-Cost Moves Ahead of Feb. 5 Trade Deadline

The Los Angeles Lakers are surveying the market for cost-effective trades as the Feb. 5 NBA deadline approaches, league sources told ESPN’s Tim Bontemps and Brian Windhorst.

After opening the 2025-26 campaign on a high note, Los Angeles has slipped in the standings, exposing gaps on the perimeter and in the paint. Team executives are reportedly prioritizing two needs: a reliable 3-and-D wing and an interior rim protector.

President of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka holds only one first-round pick that can be traded — in either 2030 or 2031 — plus several expiring contracts, including those of Gabe Vincent, Rui Hachimura and Maxi Kleber. Because that package may not yield a frontline contributor, the front office is considering flipping the single first-rounder for multiple lower-value selections to increase flexibility, according to the report.

“They’re going to be looking for bargain deals, and they might find one if they’re willing to absorb long-term salary,” an unnamed Western Conference general manager told ESPN, adding that any incoming player must complement Luka Doncic to justify the move.

Top targets and lingering obstacles

New Orleans forward Herb Jones is believed to be high on Los Angeles’ wish list, yet the Pelicans are not entertaining offers for the defensive specialist at this time. League observers note that stance could change if the Lakers assemble a more aggressive proposal.

Pelinka has emphasized preserving future cap space, a philosophy that could complicate attempts to land marquee talent before the deadline. With roughly three weeks remaining, front-office calculations could shift as other teams signal their willingness to negotiate.

Continued interest in Jonathan Kuminga

One player who fits the Lakers’ “bargain” profile is Jonathan Kuminga. The Golden State forward has fallen out of the Warriors’ rotation, and Los Angeles has tracked his availability since last offseason. Sources indicate the Lakers could assemble an offer built around expiring deals and limited draft compensation if Golden State is open to moving the 21-year-old wing.

The trade market officially closes on Feb. 5 at 3 p.m. ET.
